Welcome to the Blondo Street Construction Project Website.
This site is dedicated to keeping you informed of the progress and latest information on this major street improvement project. The site is hosted by HGM Associates Inc., the engineering firm selected by the City of Omaha to perform construction staking, observation and management support services on this project.

Project Description
Blondo Street is currently a two lane facility that has seen a significant increase in traffic volumes due to the residential growth in this area. The construction project will improve the roadway to a 4 lane facility with turn lanes where necessary. The project includes the addition of a pedestrian trail on the north side of Blondo and landscaping improvements throughout.

This project will take two construction seasons to complete the improvements. The project was awarded to Hawkins Construction Company. Contract for construction of these improvements totals $3,064,000.00.

Work Zone Safety and Suggestions

  • Accidents create long back-ups and increase the likelihood of additional accidents six-fold. In fact, accidents and their resulting traffic back-ups are responsible for about 60% of congestion on urban highways. Traffic volume is responsible for only 40%!
  • The two main reasons for work-zone crashes are speeding and inattentive driving. Don’t tailgate and don’t speed. Note the posted speed limits in and around the work zone. Fines are double in work zones.
  • Most work-zone crashes occur in daylight. Most work-zone crashes involve rear-end crashes. Remember to allow 2 seconds between the vehicle in front of you for safe braking.
  • If you see flashing arrow panels or "lane closed ahead" signs, merge as soon as possible. Don’t wait to change lanes and don’t change lanes in the work zone.
  • Minimize distractions. Avoid changing radio stations and using mobile phones while driving in the work zone.
  • Be patient. Work zone crew members are working to improve your safety. Stay alert and expect the unexpected. Keep an eye out for workers and their equipment.
